MTV Video Music Awards 2013

The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards have come and gone. Have you come out of the twerk-induced VMA coma yet? August 25th turned Brooklyn into a full-fledged fiesta with a rad red carpet and star studded Pre-Show, eight insane live performances, a reunion for the record books and some awesome awards. We know there’s no possible way you could have missed the single most-watched thing in MTV.com history, but in case you need a refresher, let’s recap.

Our Pre-Show wrapped around Barclays Center (like, the red carpet was on the STREET) and it was one of our favorites ever. It had two pitch perfect performances by the new faces of pop, Austin Mahone and Ariana Grande, plus Rachel Antonoff and Grimes asked all the hard-hitting style questions on Red Carpet Report.

At 9 PM, our KAWS-ified arena filled to the brim, and the 2013 VMAs officially started with a Lady Gaga performance worthy of some major ‘Applause.’ With our heads spinning from Gagalupe’s half dozen costume changes, the show moved right along with Selena Gomez accepting the award for Best Pop Video. Shortly after, Miley Cyrus tongued and twerked her way around the stage in what has since become one of the most legendary VMA performances of all time. Robin Thicke, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar got the audience wildin’ out before Macklemore and Ryan Lewis graciously accepted the award for Best Hip-Hop Video from Iggy Azalea and Lil’ Kim. Kanye West left us breathless with his silhouetted show of ‘Blood On The Leaves’ and Daft Punk made a rare public appearance to present Taylor Swift with the Best Female Video award.

The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard honoree, Justin Timberlake, showed off his serious superstar status with a fifteen minute medley performance of his best work that included a scream-inducing set with *NSYNC. Maybe the audience reaction is why Austin Mahone seems ready to follow in Justin’s footsteps when he snagged a Moonman for Artist To Watch. But the show was far from over! Macklemore and Ryan Lewis served us with a moving performance of their Best Video With A Social Message-winning song ‘Same Love.’ Drake showed off his range with a medley performance. One Direction had the ‘Best Night Ever’ when they won Best Song Of The Summer. Bruno Mars graciously grabbed the award for Best Male Video before taking the stage for an incredible performance of ‘Gorilla.’ Justin Timberlake closed out his epic VMA night with the Moonman for Video Of The Year and Katy Perry took us home with a killer rendition of her hit ‘Roar’ live from beneath the Brooklyn Bridge.

Will MTV be able to top eight super sweet performances, Twerkgate 2013 and a slew of awesome awards? Guess we’ll have to wait until next year to find out. Until then, guys.
